Since none of you could make it to dinner tonight, I thought it would be a great time to ignore my cultural reading homework and illustrate using my absurdly advanced graphic design prowess how much Ecuadorians love their kitchen wear/condiments/food options.
Dinner is by no means the most important meal of the day for Ecuadorians, that would be lunch, yet almost every night I receive quite the presentation. At first I thought it was because I was a guest and they wanted to impress me, but no they really just use an insane amount of dishware for anything involving food. If my host mother sees me grab an apple, immediately a fork, knife, napkin and plate appear before me. When I try to explain that I can eat the apple as is without any utensils I often get the strangest looks.
This brings me to dinner tonight. Since lunch is the big meal, dinner is often bread and coffee but oh if only it were that simple. Tonight I came downstairs to approximately 5 knives, 1 spoons, 3 cups, 1 napkin, 4 plates, 2 beverage options besides my already full coffee cup, bread, cheese, 2 types of jam, margarine, sugar and more instant coffee. It felt like I was sitting behind a food fortress.
I also had one of my longest conversations with my host mom over dinner tonight…this whole Ecuador thing might be working out after all.
